This morning, millions of people in the United States got an extra hour of sleep. At 2 a.m. on Sunday 1 November 2026, clocks there rolled back to 1 a.m. as daylight saving time ended. In Yangon, Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, nothing happened at all, and that’s not an accident.
Why some countries move their clocks
Earth is tilted about 23.4° on its axis. Far from the equator, that tilt makes summer days very long and winter days short. Daylight saving time (DST) shifts the clock forward an hour in summer so the extra light lands in the evening, when people are awake to use it, instead of at 4:30 in the morning.
Close to the equator, day length barely changes through the year. Singapore gets roughly 12 hours of daylight in June and roughly 12 hours in December. Moving the clock would solve a problem these places simply don’t have. That’s why Myanmar (UTC+6:30), Thailand (UTC+7), Malaysia and Singapore (UTC+8) keep the same time all year.
Who changed recently
- United States and Canada: ended DST on 1 November 2026 (fall back).
- UK and most of Europe: ended DST on 25 October 2026.
- New Zealand: started DST on 27 September 2026 (now NZDT, UTC+13).
- Australia (NSW, Victoria, ACT, Tasmania, South Australia): started DST on 4 October 2026. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory don’t use DST.
What it means for calling home
If you work abroad, the gap between you and family in Myanmar may have quietly changed this season:
| Where you are | Ahead/behind Yangon now | When it shifts again |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok | +30 min | Never (no DST) |
| Singapore / Kuala Lumpur | +1 h 30 min | Never (no DST) |
| Sydney / Melbourne | +4 h 30 min | April 2027 (back to +3 h 30 min) |
| Brisbane / Perth | +3 h 30 min / +1 h 30 min | Never (no DST) |
| Auckland | +6 h 30 min | April 2027 (back to +5 h 30 min) |
| New York | −11 h 30 min | March 2027 (back to −10 h 30 min) |
Quick tip: a 7 p.m. call in Yangon is now 11:30 p.m. in Sydney and 1:30 a.m. the next day in Auckland. Check before you ring.
Does DST actually help?
It’s still argued about. The original idea was to save energy, but modern studies find the savings are small or mixed. Sleep researchers, including the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, have argued for permanent standard time because the spring shift disrupts sleep. Many countries have dropped DST altogether, and the debate keeps coming back in the US and EU.
Myanmar’s unusual half-hour
Myanmar is one of a handful of places that sits on a half-hour offset (UTC+6:30), alongside India (UTC+5:30), parts of Australia and a few others. It roughly matches the sun over the country, which is why noon in Yangon feels like noon.
